Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor antiviral agent used in combination with other antivirals for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It works by slowing the growth of the virus. This medication is not a cure for HIV, nor does it prevent the passing of HIV to others. This medication contains lamivudine. The use of lamivudine, abacavir, and tenofovir in combination may not be effective in treating HIV infection.

HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Lamivudine is taken together with zidovudine (AZT) or other medications used to treat HIV.

Lamivudine and zidovudine are approved individually by the FDA for the treatment of HIV infection in adults and children. Because these two medicines are frequently prescribed together, the manufacturer has combined them into one tablet. Combivir was approved by the FDA as a coformulation on September 27, 1997, for use in combination with other antiretroviral medications for the treatment of HIV infection in adults and in children more than 12 years old.
