Lamborghini says that the Gallardo, the V-10 supercar it introduced in 2004, is the best-selling vehicle it's ever produced. The company celebrated on Thursday the assembly of its 3000th Gallardo. The number surpasses the record 2903 Diablos the company sold in a decade. The Diablo was replaced by the Murcielago in 2002. Lamborghini is now a unit of the Volkswagen Group, run by the Audi brand.

Lamborghini has rolled out models such as the four-seat Espada and various V8 sports cars, but it is the midengine supercars that identify the marque. Models like the wild Countach and the Diablo of the 1990s are instantly recognizable as Lamborghini cars, with their sinister styling by Marcello Gandini promising equally outlandish performance. Though some may question the current German/Italian marriage, the products of this merger, the 200-mph Murcielago (the Diablo's successor) and the equally breathtaking Gallardo, leave no doubt as to its benefit.

The bull on the Automobili Lamborghini insignia matches perfectly the company's reputation of building exotic sports cars. From the Miura, the Countach, to the Diablo, every automobile that has rolled out of the Sant'Agata Bolognese factory was designed with the same forceful personality as the fighting bull shown on the emblem: Its head hunched over, nostrils flared, horns lowered and pointed forward, there is absolutely no uncertainty about its aim to intimidate. Recently the Italian sports-car maker added another member to its family: the Gallardo (pronounced ga-yárdo). It's sexy, it's fast and it's agile. And, of course, intimidating.
