Lactulose may be given as a retention enema to patients who are unable to take the medication orally (for example, those in a coma). Lactulose syrup must be diluted with a salt solution before being used rectally. For home use make sure your prescriber or health care professional explain how to mix and deliver the medication and provide you with the necessary supplies. For best results, try to keep the solution in as long as possible. Wash hands thoroughly after use.
KRISTALOSET™ (Lactulose) is a synethetic disaccharide in the form of crystals for reconstitution prior to use for oral administration. Each 10 g of lactulose contains less than 0.3 g galactose and lactose as a total sum. The pH range is 3.0 to 7.0

Lactulose passes almost completely unabsorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and essentially unchanged into the large intestine where it is metabolised by saccharolytic bacteria mainly into lactic acid and small amounts of acetic and formic acids. Urinary excretion of unchanged lactulose has been reported to be 3% or less.
