Labor Strikes
built 645 days ago
Labor strikes often and unnecessarily cost companies millions. Inadequate strike preparedness is usually the cause. What, you may ask, can assure your company's survival in the event of a work stoppage? Only a comprehensive, proven Labor Crisis Contingency Plan which is custom-tailored to your business operation.
It's difficult to say when the first real labor strike occurred. The word "strike" was first used in the 1700s, and probably comes from to notion of dealing a blow to the employer [ref]. In 1786, a group of printers in Philadelphia requested a raise and the company rejected it. They stopped working in protest and eventually received their raise. Other professionals followed suit in the next few decades. Everyone in a city who practiced the same profession agreed to set prices and wages at the same rate. Members would shun anyone who diverged from the agreement, refusing to work in the same shop and forcing employers to fire them.
Meeting planners need not look far these days to hear news about labor strikes affecting the meetings, travel and hospitality industry. From work stoppages to picketing and work slowdowns, planners have faced many challenging situations in connection with their organizations' meetings and events.
The agreement prohibits labor strikes and lock-outs during the term of the current mill contracts and their four-year extensions. International Paper will continue to bargain local mill labor contracts as each nears expiration. Contract expiration dates are staggered over a four-year cycle.
Spartacist CC members argue in Boston against calling for labor strikes because you have to be “serious” about it. The ICL international secretary asks where the Brazilian CLC resolution was actually passed. And in a letter (7 November 1997) attacking the comrades who formed the Permanent Revolution Faction in France, Parks wrote: “When we do propose tactics we are serious about proposing things that actually have a possibility of winning, and not posturing as the most militant windbags on the left” (see Internationalist special supplement, “Crisis in the ICL” [March 1998]).
Inform attendees: Planners should remember that attendees are likely to hear or read news reports concerning the strike or labor dispute. Organizations should maintain regular communication with their attendees regarding the situation and the organization's response.
