Kyra Sedgwick plays Brenda Johnson, the homicide cop with a Southern accent and a penchant for cajoling confessions, in the TV series The Closer. Sedgwick has worked steadily as film and theater actress since 1985, when she starred in the movie War and Love and had a guest role on Miami Vice. She gained critical notices for her performance in Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July (1989, with Tom Cruise) and had a lead in the popular romantic comedy Singles (1992). Kyra Sedgwick continued to work steadily into the new millennium, appearing in critically acclaimed films like 2000’s What’s Cooking? and 2002’s Personal Velocity -- while ... taking time out to raise her two children with husband Kevin (Sosie and Travis). It wasn’t until she appeared on an episode of the FOX hit Ally McBeal (alongside Calista Flockhart and Portia de Rossi) that Kyra began to actively pursue a role on a TV show, as she realized that it would allow her to spend more time at home with her family. After taking on roles in a number of independent films (including a trio of efforts starring her husband), Kyra landed a gig on a 2003 CBS drama entitled Queens Supreme. Despite the presence of such familiar faces as Oliver Platt and Robert Loggia, the series was canceled after just three airings -- yet this didn’t stop Kyra from looking for work on the small screen.

Kyra Sedgwick was born in New York City to a wealthy family on August 19, 1965 and spent her childhood attending private schools. In 1981, at the age of 15, Kyra made her professional acting debut in the Off-Broadway play "Time Was". The following year, at 16, she had her TV acting debut in the regular role of Julia Shearer in the NBC daytime serial "Another World".
