Kyo Kyo has been the vocalist in a Japanese rock band called Dir en grey since 1997. In their live preformances Kyo is violent and odd..(as in scratching himself with the microphone,hitting/slapping himself, putting a bucket on his head, knocking into things sometimes, cutting his wrists, and of course putting his hand down his pants while singing…) but he doesn’t believe violence is necessary. His real name is Nishimura Tooru, but he got the nickname Kyo because he hate his real name. The meaning of his nickname is the first hieroglyph of Kyoto city,Japan, were Kyo was born.

Kyo had an unsteady relationship with his mother, who always seemed protective of him when he was a child. Because of this, Kyo always wondered if his mother was ashamed of him because he was possessed by the spirit of the cat and that his mother didn't want others to know about him. After his mother committed suicide, Kyo's father blamed the death on him because he was the cursed cat. Towards the end of the manga, Kyo makes an effort to reconcile with his father, but was violently rejected by the man. It was during this confrontation when Kyo realizes that his father had shunned his mother in addition to him, hinting that his mother committed suicide because of her protectiveness of Kyo. Kyo sees how pitiful his father was in blaming everything on him and decides to leave. Whether he reconciled with his father by the end of the manga is unknown.
Kyo literally means sutra, the voice or teaching of a Buddha. In this sense, it ... means sound, rhythm or vibration. Also, the Chinese character for [K]yo originally meant the warp in a piece of woven cloth, symbolizing the continuity of life throughout past, present and future. In a broad sense, kyo conveys the concept that all things in the universe are a manifestation of the Mystic Law.

Kyo followed the trail of the King of Fighters tournament, hoping for a chance at revenge. His search led him to the same place he had escaped from. Following a familiar path, Kyo eventually arrived in time to see Benimaru and Shingo fighting the powerful Krizalid. Also present were two unknown fighters assisting them: a young man named K' and a heavily armored cyborg named Maxima. Krizalid was a deadly foe, but with Kyo's help, the New Hero Team managed to kill him. Afterwards, with the base crumbling around him, he swore vengeance on NESTS and continued his hunt.
