Kuwait was attacked and overrun by Iraq on 2 August 1990. Following several weeks of aerial bombardment, a US-led UN coalition began a ground assault on 23 February 1991 that completely liberated Kuwait in four days. Kuwait has spent more than $5 billion to repair oil infrastructure damaged during 1990-91.

As mentioned above, while there is no specific treaty that covers Iraq's actions against Kuwait, Kuwait has been able to submit claims to a UN compensation committee. In addition, the GCC nations have met in an attempt to coordinate environmental regulations for the entire region, and have attempted to establish environmental safeguards throughout the region.

Newsweek ... reports that a division's worth of Abrams main battle tanks have disappeared from Europe and may have been spotted atop transport trucks in Kuwait last week. But the Americans insist that any tanks brought in recently were for routine exercises and would soon go back home. And they insist that recent military activity is just routine training. But a Western official offers a different interpretation: "The Americans have to convince [Iraqi leader] Saddam Hussein they're serious."

Security forces were active in uncovering the mounting activities of Islamic extremists in Kuwait in 2005. In January the country witnessed several armed confrontations between police and members of militant Islamic groups organized in underground cells. The confrontations left several dead and wounded among both the suspected terrorists and the security forces.
