For many years Kuwait was a minor emirate whose economy centered on sea trade and especially pearl exports. The discovery of oil in the 20th century transformed all aspects of Kuwaiti society, and today the country has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. In 1990 neighboring Iraq invaded Kuwait, precipitating the 1991 Persian Gulf War, in which an international force expelled the Iraqis.

At the 2003 Madrid Conference, the Government of Kuwait pledged $1.5 billion in assistance to Iraq. KFAED is responsible for disbursing and overseeing as much as $560 million of that assistance through grants. In 2005, KFAED contributed $50 million to Pakistan earthquake relief, contributed $50 million for Hurricane Katrina relief, and made significant contributions to tsunami relief efforts. Kuwait joined the United Nations on May 14, 1963 thereby becoming the 111th member of the world body. Kuwait has upheld the UN's principle of constructive cooperation, based on peace, equality and justice, among the nations of the world. The UN, on its part, has reciprocated by lending international support to Kuwait during the invasion by Iraq. Kuwait has worked for strengthening the organisation and has pledged more funds to the UN corpus than its prescribed quota.

There is no railway system in Kuwait... the government announced plans to construct an underground metro in an effort to ease traffic congestion. An international airport is located in the southern outskirts of the Kuwait city metropolitan area and Kuwait Airways is the national airline owned by the government. In 2004 Kuwait allowed the first privately owned airline, (Jazeera Airways), to base itself in and operate out of the country. The country has three modern seaports, one of which specializes in oil exports.
By mutual consent both Britain and Kuwait agreed to terminate the protectorate in the Treaty of Independence of 1961. Before the ink was dry, the Iraqi dictator Qasim made a bid to incorporate Kuwait into Iraq. Only the timely arrival of British troops, and condemnation by the international community, averted an invasion.
