[O]f hyperactivity as a child, Kurt Cobain was medicated much of his young life. He had to take medicine to concentrate on school, and medicine to go to sleep at night. It's no surprise that he became addicted to drugs later in life. Despite his many personal problems, Cobain had an uncanny ability to write catchy radio tunes. As the leader of Nirvana, Cobain helped usher into the mainstream the music that spoke for a generation of kids that were disenchanted with hippies, and yuppies. Playing the guitar from the age of 14, he knew right away that he could express his feelings of loneliness and frustration through the instrument.

Kurt Cobain was the lead singer and guitarist for the band Nirvana, whose melodic rock songs bridged punk with pop and sold millions of records in the early 1990s. The stripped-down, amped-up anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit" made it to the top of the charts in 1991 and helped "grunge" rock unseat Michael Jackson-style pop. (It ... helped put Seattle on the musical map -- Cobain was from the sort-of nearby logging town of Aberdeen, Washington.) The band's albums included Bleach (1989), Nevermind (1991) and In Utero (1993). Nirvana was briefly the hottest band in the world, but Cobain's discomfort with fame, personal demons and battles with drugs quickly caused problems. His status as rock legend was cemented when he committed suicide in 1994, apparently by shooting himself in the mouth with a shotgun.

Kurt Cobain often ridiculed rival Pearl Jam, arguing that it lacked the underground purity of Nirvana - that it was simply an old-line commercial rock band in grunge clothing. But Cobain, who was 27 when he died, liked Vedder personally, and that made him feel guilty about the put-downs. "I'm not going to do that anymore," he said in a 1992 interview. "It hurts Eddie and he's a good guy"; L.A. Times 5/1/94, "He Didn't Ask for All This" (Cobain about Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam)

Kurt Cobain's body was discovered on April 8, 1994 by electrician Gary Smith, who was to install a burglar alarm in the residence. It is likely he killed himself on April 5. Heroin and valium both were found in his blood. The shotgun blast destroyed his head to the point where he was not recognizable; the body was identified from fingerprints. Cobain was 27.
