Kurt Cobain struggling to play his Epiphone Jr. happy starter guitar for his patrons. Cobain's childhood was a happy one, complete with a mother, father, puppy dog, and a white picket fence. As a child, Cobain was heralded as a honor student, one who never committed crimes or, heaven forbid, dropped out of high school. He was ... incredibly friendly and outgoing, telling his friends to "Come as you are" to his house. He also liked to play board games like Saropoloy, Scrabble, and Twenty Questions. With adolescence, Cobain began to experiment with teenage girl deodorants and heroin. His parents, upon discovering his tendancy to smell like sunshine and rainbows, scolded him so badly that he left his home and slept under a bridge.
At school, Cobain took little interest in sports. At his father's insistence, Cobain joined the junior high wrestling team. While he was good at it, he despised it. Later, his father signed him up for a local baseball league, where Cobain would intentionally strike out to avoid having to play.[7] Instead, Cobain focused on his art courses. He often drew during classes, including objects associated with human anatomy. Cobain was friends with a gay student at his school, sometimes suffering bullying at the hands of homophobic students. That friendship led some to believe that he himself was gay.
Cobain’s friend Dylan Carlson purchased the twenty-gauge Remington shotgun March 30, before Cobain entered treatment. Cobain wanted the gun to protect his home against intruders, he said, and specifically requested light loads that would not blast through walls and threaten others in the house. He gave Carlson the cash for the purchase because he did not want the weapon confiscated as his others had been. Carlson reported that Cobain took the gun to his residence.

At the age of 14, Cobain was given his first guitar by his uncle. (Cobain was offered the choice of a guitar or a bicycle as a birthday gift, and chose the guitar.) Cobain started by learning a few covers, including AC/DC's "Back in Black" and The Cars' "My Best Friend's Girl". He soon began working on his own songs.[18]

Friends who visited in the summer of 1992 found a full working artist's studio in Cobain's L.A. apartment. "He had 100 square feet of canvas," says Jesse Reed, Cobain's best friend from high school. "He was talking of quitting music and opening his own gallery."
