Kurt Cobain: Aberdeen Avenue

Kurt Cobain's painting and collage on the back of a board game was made in Olympia, in the late '80s. Most of his artwork has been seen only by his closest friends. The Aberdeen Museum of History... will display some of Cobain's work in an exhibit on musicians from Grays Harbor County. The exhibit will open this summer.

Born to Donald and Wendy Cobain on February 20th, 1967 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Kurt Donald Cobain's first home was at 2830-1/2 Aberdeen Avenue in Hoquiam. Cobain's father worked at Derrell Thompson's Chevron Station at 726 Simpson Avenue in Hoquiam while his mother stayed at home with the newborn.

In the middle of tenth grade, Cobain moved back to live with his mother in Aberdeen. Two weeks before his graduation, Cobain dropped out of high school after realizing that he did not have enough credits to graduate. His mother gave him an ultimatum: either get a job or leave. After a week or so, Cobain found his clothes and other belongings packed away in boxes.[11] Forced out of his mother's home, Cobain often stayed at friends' houses and sneaked into his mother's basement occasionally.[12] Cobain worked various odd jobs in the Aberdeen community and earned enough to rent an apartment with a friend in June 1985; Cobain had to move out a few months later when he couldn't keep up with the rent.[13] Cobain later claimed that when he could not find anywhere else to stay, he lived under a bridge over the Wishkah River,[14] an experience that inspired the Nevermind track "Something in the Way". However in 2001 Krist Novoselic claimed that Cobain never really lived there, saying, "He hung out there, but you couldn't live on those muddy banks, with the tides coming up and down. That was his own revisionism."[15]

In 1982, Cobain left his father’s place and bounced around from relative to relative for several months. He then went to live with his mother who was with her boyfriend Pat O’Connor at the time. (They later married.) Attending high school in Aberdeen, he impressed teachers and students with his artistic talents. Cobain seemed to have odd tastes in subject matter, drawing a sperm transforming into an embryo for one project, according to Heavier than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain by Charles R. Cross.

Growing up in Aberdeen, drawing was Cobain's first love. His family quickly noticed his skill. "Even when he was a little kid, he could draw a picture of Mickey Mouse that looked perfect," remembers grandfather Leland Cobain.
