Kryptonite: Red Kryptonite
built 626 days ago
In Post-Crisis continuity, Red Kryptonite does not exist naturally. It first appeared as an artificial construct of Mister Mxyzptlk that eliminated Superman's powers. A second variety was later revealed as a synthetic variant created by Ra's al Ghul, using notes that he had stolem from Batman. That red K was said to have had an accelerated half-life (which caused the color change) and caused Superman's skin to become translucent, meaning he had nothing regulating the intense sunlight he was absorbing.

Recently, with the arrival of Kara, the new Supergirl, massive quantities of new Kryptonite came to the Earth. A whole rainbow of colors landed across the Earth, most of which the JLA collected, but much of which has managed to go awry, including a hundred pounds in the hands of the new Red Hood, Jason Todd, and with some in the hands of the Checkmate organization.

Red Kryptonite was created from Green Kryptonite that passed through a mysterious red-colored cloud while on its way to Earth. Exposure to Red Kryptonite causes strange side effect and mutations in Kryptonians (growing wings, for instance). The effects from each specific piece of the Red form lasts about 1-2 days. Good News: Once exposed to a "specific" piece of Red Kryptonite, a person is permanently immune to that piece. Bad News: Each piece of Red Kryptonite is different and will effect potential host with its own unique mutative side effects.NOTE: On the WB's SMALLVILLE series, Red Kryptonite causes Clark to become the opposite of his true personality.

Kryptonite was depicted as being so abundant that many ordinary criminals kept a supply as a precaution against Superman's interference. In an effort to reduce the use of kryptonite in Superman storylines, in a 1971 storyline, all known kryptonite on Earth is transmuted into iron, though kryptonite could still be synthetically manufactured by a variety of known and unknown means, and additional material left over from the destruction of Krypton would continue to fall from space.

On the TV series, Smallville, Red Kryptonite causes severe changes in Clark Kent's personality, becoming rebellious, unpredictable and acting purely on erotic and selfish emotions (lose all inhibitions). In this form, he normally wears a leather jacket and rides around on a motorcycle.

The company ... helped redefine the deadly potential of Kryptonite. Frantic used Image Savant's Spore technology alongside their own custom particle renderer to make organic lighting effects and particle-dense representations of Kryptonite's inherent instability. The company created spontaneously growing Kryptonite crystals by building a custom 3ds Max script, which was adapted for use by the film's other VFX teams.
