LYCOS RETRIEVER
Kryptonite: Green Kryptonite
built 654 days ago
In the television series Smallville, Green Kryptonite, refined or not, can cause normal humans to mutate and acquire superhuman abilities, although an outside catalyst (such as a strong electrical charge) is usually required. Although most of these were accidental (the mutants were accidentally exposed), others started to refine and take in Kryptonite willingly to obtain its effects. One character named Marsh inhaled liquid Kryptonite to gain superhuman strength. This ... gave him temporary Kryptonite radiation, thus causing Clark to be unable to stop him until the "dose" wore off. In the episode "Void" Clark is injected with Kryptonite and apparently dies after which Chloe says "apparently actually dying neutralizes the kryptonite in your system". Since these kryptonite injections allowed other humans to have near death experiences it is unclear as to whether it was Clark's own reaction to the kryptonite that killed him.

On the TV series THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERBOY, the only known supply of Kryptonite was located in the Shift Military Institute. The deadly rays of green Kryptonite can be blocked by sheets of lead. On LOIS & CLARK "red" Kryptonite made Superman apathetic to the point he let bank robbers get away on the pretext that it was the job of the police to catch criminals, not his (Superman). On the latest Superman franchise SMALLVILLE teenager Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) wore a necklace made from a green a stone that turned out to be Kryptonite. Whenever teenager Clark Kent (Tom Welling) got near Lana he became weak and disoriented. This was a bummer because Clark really liked Lana. Oh well, so much for budding romances.

Kryptonite is a fictional substance from the Superman mythos, originating in the Superman radio show series. The material, usually shown as having been created from the remains of Superman's native planet of Krypton, generally has detrimental effects on Superman. The name "kryptonite" covers a variety of forms of the substance, but usually refers to the most common "green" form.

In addition to "plain" Green Kryptonite, multiple varieties have appeared on the scene through the years. These varieties are different isotopes of the same element, and they can come in different grades, or strengths. The different isotopes have distinctly different effects on Superman and other life forms, but these effects most likely all stem from the disruption of cells. Some varieties of kryptonite appeared in only one comic book issue or story arc. For example:

Post IC & on New Earth, Blue Kryptonite owned by Lex Luthor in Action Comics Annual #10 has effects similar to the pre-crisis blue kryptonite. It has been shown to negatively affect Bizarro in a painful manner remniscent of the effect that Green Kryptonite has on Superman. The effects of blue kryptonite on normal kryptonians is unknown. Blue Kryptonite has been used in Superman video games as a life restorative due to its bizarro nature.

Kryptonite was featured in Superman: The Movie. An imperfect synthesis of artificial kryptonite containing tar appeared in Superman III. Developed by Gus Gorman, it was intended to be a copy of Green Kryptonite. However, the substitution of tar for a crucial component resulted in the synthetic Kryptonite behaving like "Red Kryptonite"; in this case, the kryptonite turned Superman evil and eventually split him into two people.
