Kramer Vs. Kramer
built 381 days ago
In her first Academy Award-winning role, Streep played Joanna Kramer, a wife and mother who, unsatisfied with her life, decides to leave her marriage and child. Her performance captured her character's confusion and emotional strain and served to cement Streep's growing reputation as a consummate actress. She delivered two other outstanding supporting performances in 1979, as an alluring Southern lawyer in The Seduction of Joe Tynan and as Woody Allen's ex-wife in Manhattan. Streep was ... nominated for Academy Awards in 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1998, 1999, and 2002; she won her second Oscar for her role in Sophie's Choice (1982).

A two-player game reminiscent of Pong, Kramer vs. Kramer (Winter 1980) differed in that it was played in a court rather than on one. Sadly, few people outside of New York and LA ever got the chance to play this title. Columbia Pictures only distributed the game to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as part of its 1980 Oscar promotions.

Although it is a bitter court battle, Joanna wins custody of young Billy Kramer, even though she was the one that left and went semi-crazy. Only days later, Joanna visits Ted's apartment to gather up Billy's things. Joanna, though, somehow see's the light, and gives custody of Billy back to Ted.

These days, Kramer may be safer than he suspects. Tucked away in a posh town in Connecticut, the man who staged such spectacles as die-ins on Wall Street is no longer smack-dab in the crosshairs. His infamy is fading into history. In 1981, the year AIDS was first diagnosed, he co-founded the first AIDS organization, Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), in New York City. Kramer next sounded the clarion call for the shrewd, angry street-activist group AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), which he co-founded in 1987. He and his anger-fueled, cop-confronting, FDA-busting, headline-grabbing gang showed that despised and feared “AIDS victims” could be fierce, strategic fighters capable of changing the status quo within government, medicine, Big Pharma and society at large.

Despite his legacy, folks in power are less aware of Kramer these days. Since the early ’90s, when Kramer met Webster, and especially since his transplant, his presence in AIDS activism has been so limited that many young activists have no idea who he is. “Never heard of him,” said Johnny Guaylupo, 25, a member of the two-year-old national activist group Campaign to End AIDS (C2EA). Told who he was, Guaylupo said he thought he’d seen Kramer in a video on ’80s activism.
