Kosovo: Provinces
built 118 days ago
During the Neolithic period, the region of Kosovo lay within the extent of the Vinča-Turdaş culture. In the 4th to 3rd centuries BC, it was the territory of the Thraco-Illyrian tribe of the Dardani, forming part of the kingdom of Illyria. The Illyrians were conquered by Rome in the 160s BC, and made the Roman province of Illyricum in 59 BC. The Kosovo region became part of Moesia Superior in AD 87. The Slavic migrations reached the Balkans in the 6th to 7th century. The area was absorbed into the Byzantine empire in the 850s.
Kosovo covers an area of 10,887 sq km (4,203 sq mi). Mountains and hills cover part of the province, with several peaks in the Šar Planina range rising to more than 2,500 m (8,200 ft). The mountain slopes are covered with deciduous forests, meadows, and pastureland. A branch of the Drin River rises in Kosovo, and the Ibar and Sitnica rivers ... flow through the region.

Members of the UN Security Council agreed that Fatmir Sejdiu, president of the semi-autonomous province of Kosovo, could speak at the Council’s meeting on the Troika report. Russia and Serbia opposed the decision and stated that Kosovo cannot declare itself independent without a Security Council resolution. The Council’s division on the subject shows that no concrete outcome will prevail from this meeting.

The economic problems are most pronounced in poor provinces such as Kosovo, despite a program of large scale investments over the last 10 years. One fear of Yugoslav leaders is that economic strains in less developed parts of the country could trigger new political tension.
