De economie van Kosovo is een van de sterkst onderontwikkelde in Europa. Het BNP per inwoner bedraagt slechts een geschatte € 1565 per inwoner [14] Een belangrijk deel van de economie bestaat echter uit illegale activiteiten, die niet meegenomen worden in dit BNP. Deze zwarte economie bestaat onder andere uit het smokkelen van benzine, auto’s en sigaretten. Gedurende de jaren '90 heeft Kosovo veel te lijden gehad onder het gevoerde economische beleid, internationale sancties en de vele conflicten. [15]
