Korea is a place of great natural beauty. Soraksan Park is a good place to view the scenic mountains that are a trademark of Korea. Many Koreans and foreign tourists consider the park one of the countries main tourist attractions. Therefore, accommodations and transportation are not difficult to arrange.

Under the 2002 theme of "Knowledge in a World of Risk: A Compass Towards New Prosperity," participants take part in discussions on subjects ranging from an analysis of the challenges facing the U.S. economy to corporate management in times of uncertainty to predictions on new management practices of the future. In ancient Chinese texts, Korea is referred to as "Rivers and Mountains Embroidered on Silk" (금수강산, ) and "Eastern Nation of Decorum (동방예의지국, ). During the 7th and 8th centuries, the silk road connected Korea to Arabia. In 845, Arab traders wrote, "Beyond China is a land where gold abounds and which is named Silla. The Muslims who have gone there have been charmed by the country and tend to settle there and abandon all idea of leaving."

Legend has it, that Korea was first established by Tan'gum Wang'gom in 2333 B.C., who named the new kingdom Choson, "Land of the Morning Calm", and established his capital at Asadal, today's P'yong'yang. Tan'gum was the son of Hwan-ung, descended from heaven on the order of his father Hwan-in, king of the eastern heaven, and of Ung-yo, "the girl incarnated from a bear": indeed she was first a bear deity who chose to go through a trial for a chance to live among men in the beautiful country Hwan-ung had created in the eastern land.
