Koala: Mother
built 644 days ago
When the young koala is about one year old, its mother is able to mate again. This usually happens between September and January, when the trees ring with a wide range of mating noises. Koala mating songs range from the pig-like grunts and growls of the males, to the high pitched trembling sounds of the females. Often, young male koalas will be driven off by older males. To survive, they must find a suitable area which is not already occupied by other dominant male koalas.
Gestation lasts 35 days, after which one koala is born. The baby koala is very small when it is born, and lives in its mother's pouch for five to seven months. After this time, koalas gradually become independent and survive on their own.

Once inside the pouch, the young koala attaches itself to one of its mother's two nipples, which swells to fill its mouth. This prevents the joey from being dislodged from its source of food. The mother contracts her strong sphincter muscles at the pouch opening to prevent the baby from falling out.

The koala breeds once each season, and the usual number of offspring is one. It remains in the pouch for 6 months; then it clings to the back of its mother and is carried around in this manner until 1 year old. See ... Mammalia; Marsupialia.

The Great Koala Rescue. By Ruth Musgrave. Photo: Baby koalas, called joeys, are completely dependent on their mothers for survival in the wild. Frightened and helpless, a baby koala clings to a tree branch. Below, his mother screams. Searching for their dinner of eucalyptus leaves, she manages to get her head stuck in one family's fence.
