Koala: Koala Habitat
built 634 days ago
Koala HABITAT: Today, Koala populations are confined to a handful of the remaining eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia, from northern Queensland to southern Australia. Don’t let the koala’s cuddly looks fool you; they have powerful legs and forefeet that help them scale the eucalyptus trees that they live in.

koala Koala populations in fragmented areas of bushland are at great risk of localised extinction from a single fire which may wipe out an entire habitat. Bushfires are extremely common in the Summer months.

The koala holds no special status although the Environment Australia Biodiversity Group calls the koala lower risk--near threatened (1996). Koalas were nearly exterminated at the turn of the century because they were hunted for their fur, and because their environments were destroyed by fires caused by humans. After1927 as a result of public outcry the koala became legally protected. Currently their main threat is habitat destruction. Management of the koala can be difficult. Populations that are protected can reach such high numbers in an area that they destroy the trees on which they feed.
Koala The koala is a marsupial found in Australia.. A marsupial is an animal which the female carries her very young baby in a pouch. There are three kinds of koalas. The largest koala is the Victoria, it has darker fur to keep it warmer because it's habitat is usually in a cooler region. The New South Wales koala is the middle sized koala. It's ears are shaggier than the Queensland koala.

Historically, the geographical range of koala populations was broadly similar to today, but extended into South Australia and southern parts of Western Australia. Land clearance and hunting caused populations within this range to contract, and in many cases become extinct. However, intensive koala management and reintroduction programs have reversed this decline in many places, particularly in the south, and koalas are now locally common where suitable habitat survives. A number of localized populations have been re-established in South Australia and Western Australia.

A Koala eating leaves. The koala is not an endangered species, but it is a threatened species. One reason is the loss of habitat, which means that koalas have less space to live. In some places there are very few koalas left. But there are ... places with too many koalas, so they eat too much. Because of this the Eucalyptus trees and other animals are in danger.
