The Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, and Teutonic Knights frequently appear in the French, German, and English epic and romance literature of the Middle Ages. 'Love, War, and the Grail' examines the religious roles of the military orders, such as caring for the sick, their warrior role of fighting Muslims, and the role of Templars in the Grail romances. It traces how these roles developed over time and looks at the role of these military religious orders in fiction of the Middle Ages. This is the first in-depth study to consider the subject throughout the medieval period.
The first headquarters of the Knights Templar, Al Aqsa Mosque, on Jerusalem's Temple Mount. The Crusaders called it the Temple of Solomon, as it was built on top of the ruins of the original Temple, and it was from this location that the Knights took their name of Templar. With their military mission and extensive financial resources, the Knights Templar funded a large number of building projects around Europe and the Holy Land. Many of these structures are still standing. Many sites ... maintain the name "Temple" due to centuries-old association with the Templars.[56] For example, some of the Templars' lands in London were later rented to lawyers, which led to the names of the Temple Bar gateway and the Temple tube station. Two of the four Inns of Court which may call members to act as barristers are the Inner Temple and Middle Temple.
Knights Templar Helmet The Knights Templar were feared and respected by their foes in the Holy Land. They were admired by their foes as holy men fighting a Jihad. In fact the Templars were fearless in many of their encounters. Quite often the enemy would turn and run, because of the ferocity of the attack. They fought like men possessed, they did not ask for quarter and the Order expected them to fight unto death itself stayed their sword arm. They had a rule that retreat from an enemy would not be countenanced unless the odds were greater than three to one against them.
The Knights Templar were founded in 1119. This was after the capture of Jerusalem and the First Crusade. Many of the crusaders had returned to their homes, having fulfilled their vows, but some protection was still required for pilgrims to the Holy Land. The Knights Templar were founded by a small number of French knights who wanted to devote themselves to the protecting pilgrims en route to the Holy Land, and who wanted to form a religious community with that aim.
The real Knights Templar... professed Christianity and assumed the duty of protecting Christian pilgrims and merchants travelling through the Holy Land. They also undertook to protect the travellers' lands, castles, and other properties back home, where Templars from Jerusalem arrived to take charge. When pilgrims failed to return from their journeys, the property could pass into the Templars' permanent possession. As a result, like other holy orders founded on a vow of poverty, the Templars soon became very rich.
