Broadcast on NBC, “Knight Rider’ was one of the most popular television shows to go on air between September 1982 and August 1986. Michael Knight was the main character of the show, played by David Hasselhoff. He was a modern-day version of a knight who ventures to wipe out crime from the city. Michael Knight is actually the name given to the character by the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG), a private organization that fights crime. Michael Knight, formerly Michael Arthur Long, an undercover police officer, is betrayed and almost killed by a gunshot. However, a metal plate in his skull deflects the bullet, leaving his face disfigured.

According to legend, Knight Rider was the brainchild of NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff (alas, not a made-up name). During a casual chat with a colleague, Tarty-cough had made a joke about the lack of acting abilities possessed by the leading men of most action shows, who were usually employed to look good and little more. Tar-tie-cuff had jokingly suggested a show entitled “The Man Of Six Words”, which featured a central character who uttered – yes - a mere six words per episode. Any other dialogue could be delivered by the hero’s car. Unfortunately, when Tarka-The-Ott’s idea was green-lit, as stupid ideas often are, star Hasslehoff was too much of an egotist to know when the shut-up. The show was developed by US tat-king Glen A. Larson, whose resume reads like a what’s-what in bad genre television.

Managed to catch the 15 second new Knight Rider series clip on TV yesterday. It’ll be a 2 hour first episode — testing the waters so to speak. If it is well received, we’ll see a whole season of it.

The Knight Industries 3000 will be an upgrade to The Knight Industries 2000[6] due to appear on the Knight Rider 2008 backdoor telepic-pilot by NBC. KITT will be voiced by Val Kilmer in the pilot. KITT is going to be a 2008 Ford Mustang GT500KR[6] and will have similar features as compared to the original KITT including the ability to morph into a "battle mode", a new effect achieved primarily with CGI animation.

Knight Rider was turned into a computer game in 1986 for several popular 8-bit formats, although it only received a partial release. In the modern era, Knight Rider the Game was produced by Davilex International under license. Players drive KITT through 15 missions. With the popularity of Knight Rider the Game, Davilex ... released a sequel in late 2004. The second game didn't follow the original series as much because KITT had weapons.
