Alley's film career got a major kickoff in the early 80's, when she was cast as Vulcan officer Saavik in the blockbuster Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. Other film work included Runaway and Blind Date. Alley turned down reprising the role of Saavik in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, because she didn't want to be typecast. She resumed her TV work with appearances on The Love Boat, a co-starring role in the short-lived TV series Masquerade and a starring role in the ABC mini-series North & South.

She was a cokehead for two years after dropping out of college, and says it took her a month to drive from Kansas to California, because she had to find sources and buy drugs all along the way. She played a Vulcan in her first film, Star Trek II. Kirstie Alley's first series was Masquerade in 1983, with Greg Evigan and Rod Taylor, wherein Alley kept a watchful eye on novice spies.

Showtime has approved Fat Actress, a six-episode, half-hour hybrid comedy/reality series starring Emmy Award winner Kirstie Alley that was inspired by Alley's real life, it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment for Showtime Networks. Taking her life experiences and recreating them in the extreme, Alley plays a fictional version of herself -- a successful television and movie star whose weight gain has become the subject of every tabloid imaginable as well as the bane of her existence as she tries to find work and true love in an unforgiving Hollywood. This irreverent series, which will be co-created and executive produced by Alley and Brenda Hampton, will be unscripted, with each episode emanating from a story outline and the actors largely improvising the dialogue. "Fat Actress" will begin production in September in Los Angeles and will air on Showtime in 2005.

Alley continued to star in movies during her run on Cheers. Film work at this time included Look Who's Talking, Madhouse, Look Who's Talking Too and Look Who's Talking Now. When Cheers wrapped in 1993, Alley disappeared from the screen for a while. In 1997, Woody Allen cast her in a somewhat dramatic role in Deconstructing Harry. In that same year she reappeared on TV as the star and producer of the sitcom Veronica's Closet. Alley is the only Cheers regular who never reprised her role on spin-off series Frasier.

Alley admits to having had a cocaine addiction from 1976 until 1979, when she joined Scientology. She has served as the national spokesperson for Narconon (a controversial Scientology-affiliated drug treatment program). She has continued her Scientology training and, as of 2007, had attained the level of OT VII (Operating Thetan level 7).[4] In May 2000, she purchased the former home of fellow Scientologist Lisa Marie Presley, a 5,200-sq-ft. waterfront mansion in Clearwater, Florida, for $1.5 million. Clearwater is the spiritual headquarters of the Church of Scientology.
