Kirk Franklin is an African American who was born on 26th January, 1970 in Texas. But at a very young age Kirk was abandoned by his young parents which left the responsibility of raising him on his aunt Gertrude Franklin. Kirk from an early age nurtured his talent in music. At four he had started playing piano and at eleven he became the music director of his church. In 1992 a seventeen-voice choir was organized by Kirk called 'The Family'. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Kirk was raised by his aunt, Gertrude Franklin, after being abandoned by his parents. He developed a talent for music early, playing the piano at age four and becoming music director of his church, Greater Strangers Rest, at age eleven. After leading the DFW Mass Choir at the 1990 Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention, he organized "The Family", a seventeen-voice choir, in 1992.
