Vidor entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest career as a film director: beginning in 1913 with Hurricane in Galveston and ending in 1980 with a short documentary on painting entitled The Metaphor. He was nominated five times for an Oscar but never won in direct competition; he received an honorary award in 1979.

Vidor (1894-1982) was already a veteran director with at least one blockbuster (The Big Parade) and one artistic masterpiece (The Crowd) under his belt before he took on Hallelujah. Inspired by Robert Flaherty (Nanook of the North), he aimed to put together a film with documentary realism, mixed with classic storytelling. And he succeeded with his innovative use of sound in exterior spaces.

Vidor next worked as the director of a series of short dramatic films detailing the reform work of Salt Lake City Judge Willis Brown, a Father Flanagan-type. Vidor tried to parlay this experience into a job as a feature director with a major studio but was unsuccessful. He did manage... to find financial backing from nine doctors for his first feature, a picture with a Christian Science theme titled The Turn in the Road. Vidor spent the next year working on three more features for the newly christened Brentwood Company, including the comedy Better Times, starring his own discovery, Zasu Pitts.

Over the course of her career, Davies only made three comedies, all with director King Vidor. Interestingly enough, Vidor ... never made any other comedies, and spent his career with the kind of overly serious, noble films that Hearst would have approved of. They range from the 1928 masterpiece The Crowd to films like The Fountainhead (1949) and War and Peace (1956).

Vidor was nominated as Best Director, and the film was nominated in the short-lived category of "Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production." They had it right back then: they split the Best Picture award into its logical halves, recognizing both the commerce—Best Production, which went to the epic Wings—and the art—this award, which went to F.W. Murnau's Sunrise.
