Novak, whose real first name is Marilyn, made her movie debut in 1954. Recognizable for her beauty and blond hair, she’s best known for "Vertigo," but ... appeared in such pictures as "The Man With the Golden Arm," "Pal Joey," "The Notorious Landlady," and the popular "Falcon Crest" television series.
Columbia capitalised on this sense of remoteness and mystery by feeding the press with stories about Kim being lonely. They informed the world that lavender blue was her favourite colour, and they hinted that she was a recluse. However, although one part of the press was happy to print this waffle, another part was fascinated by Kim's love life. Newspapers and magazines regaled their readers with reports that Kim was romantically involved with, among others, Mac Trim, Frank Sinatra, Richard Quine, Cary Grant, General Rafael Trujillo, Sammy Davis Jnr, and Prince Aly Khan. The media was particularly interested in why Kim did not marry, and the yellow press was not subtle in suggesting explanations. ("Confidential" magazine with brazen vulgarity declared on one front page that it was because no one man could satisfy Kim!)
It's a far cry from the Kim Novak of the 1950s and '60s, who kept the gossip columns agog with her romances. Groomed by Columbia boss Harry Cohn, Novak progressed from a striking beauty in films such as "Pushover" and "PHFFT" to accomplished actress in "Picnic" and "Vertigo."
Novak stood out among the stars of her era, and not just in the obvious bosomy sense. She was among the last discoveries of the old studio system, having been spotted by a talent scout when she came to Los Angeles after being dubbed, of all things, Miss Deep Freeze in a beauty pageant, and soon found herself in the employ of legendary and infamous Columbia Pictures chief Harry Cohn.
In "Popular" (1999), the main girl's bathroom in the high school is called "The Novak" which holds all the pictures of the homecoming queens. The name is inspired by when movie stars would donate money to schools (often an alma mater). The writers found out that Kim Novak donated money to a school in the Santa Monica area (where the school/show is set), so they named this room after her.
