Kim Clijsters is the latest edition to a flock of young tennis prodigées. She follows in the footsteps of Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, and Venus Williams. She first caught everyone’s eye at the 1999 Wimbledon, upsetting seeded player Amanda Coetzer in the 3rd round. She then came within inches of beating the 1999 U.S. Open Champion Serena Williams in the 3rd round. The Belgian hasn’t had overnight success, but from the first day she placed her hands on a tennis racket, she was bound for it.

Kim Clijsters is een voormalig nummer 1 in het enkelspel en nummer 4 in het dubbelspel bij de junioren (1998). Ze is de eerste Belgische tennisspeler die de finale op een grandslamtoernooi (Roland Garros) bereikte. Deze finale verloor ze nipt van Jennifer Capriati. In de halve finale had ze toen die andere Belgische topper, Justine Henin, uitgeschakeld. Justine nam 2 jaar later wraak door haar in de finale van (opnieuw) Roland Garros te verslaan en zo de eerste Belgische grandslamtitel in het enkelspel op haar naam te schrijven. Ze is de eerste Belgische nummer 1 ooit.

In the other fourth round matches today Kim Clijsters defeated Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 7-5 and Martina Hingis defeated Na Li 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Serving at 80 per cent was not enough for Li to defeat Hingis. After winning the first set Li could not match the skill of Hingis and she fell away badly in the last set. Hingis and Clijsters are drawn to meet each other in the quarter-final. It will be interesting to see if Hingis can handle the power game from Clijsters.

Kim Clijsters beat Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 on Saturday to advance to the final of the Gaz de France. The top-seeded Clijsters, in her comeback tournament at home after being sidelined 10 weeks with a left wrist injury, will defend her title Sunday against first-time finalist Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Kanepi, a qualifier, reached the final by beating Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. ``Unbelievable,'' Kanepi said of her week.

The 2005 U.S. Open champion, Kim Clijsters is pregnant according to a very reliable source...her father! Based on an announcement on her dad's website, Clijsters and her boyfriend are expecting their first child due during the early part of next year. With the wedding taking place on Saturday, July 14 it looks like baby will be attending his/her parent's honeymoon. It sounds like grandpa is pretty excited about the new arrival. He probably rushed out to buy baby gifts as soon as he heard the news!
