When Kim Basinger was 16 years old, she started her modelling career by entering and winning the Athens Junior Miss contest. She followed that up by winning the title of “Junior Miss Georgia.” Basinger then headed to New York City to compete in the national Junior Miss pageant. It was there that Basinger was approached by fashion modeling mogul Eileen Ford, who offered the young beauty queen a modeling contract with Ford Modeling Agency. Initially turning down the offer in favor of singing and acting, Basinger reconsidered and headed back to New York to become a Ford model.

Yes, the Kim Basinger-Alec Baldwin split is big news, but so is something else involving the Oscar-winning "L.A. Confidential" actress -- in New York, at least. Her sandwich. Yes, at the Stage Deli, on 7th Ave. at 54th St., there is a Kim Basinger special, comprised of chicken and bacon between two slices of bread. And there's the rub. Basinger, 47, is a strict vegetarian and vocal People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals activist, and she has voiced a protest against the bacon and chicken combo.

Kim Basinger went from beauty pageants to modelling, then from Playboy magazine to television and the movies. She had parts in Never Say Never Again (1983) and The Natural (1984, with Robert Redford), but it was her starring role in 9 1/2 Weeks that gained her an audience. Basinger made headlines when she bought the small town of Braselton, Georgia in 1989; she was forced to sell it when she declared bankruptcy in 1993. She proved her acting chops in the 1997 drama L. A. Confidential (opposite Russell Crowe) and won an Oscar. Her other films include 8 Mile, in which she played Eminem's mother, The Door in the Floor (2004) and Cellular (2004).

The loan will nearly cover the cost of making the dark comedy, which will star Kim Basinger and a host of Elvis Presley lookalikes. It will be directed by Joel Zwick, who directed the low-budget smash "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Basinger will play a cosmetics peddler who, while traveling from Memphis to Las Vegas, Nev., leaves in her wake a trail of dead Elvis impersonators who die "hilariously and accidentally," according to producer Tova Laiter.
