Kid Koala

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Kid Koala's highly anticipated deubt, was a slight disappointment. Though technically proficient, it lacked the immediate glee of his demo. Kid Koala toured the globe, worked with the Gorillaz and Deltron 3030 (both equally disappointing projects), as well as opening shows for Radiohead. Earlier this year he released a 300-page comic book, Nufonia Must Fall, which featured an accompanying soundtrack, but hardly enough material for one to gauge what his next full length would hold.

Travelling with Kid Koala and performing on the same night is Amon Tobin, the legendary Ninja Tune drum & bass and abstract breaks producer. With a staggering 7 albums for Ninja Tune since the mid 1990s, Amon Tobin has been chopping up sounds as he says "like regular chickens". Currently working on soundtracks for video games and a new album for Ninja Tune, Amon Tobin's last Australian' tour was captured and released as a Solid Steel session and featured an incredible mashing of genres, sounds and styles.

Back in 1996, Kid Koala became the first North American artist signed to UK label Ninja Tune. In the years that followed Kid Koala released a string of remixes and toured North America with fellow Ninja artists: Coldcut, DJ Food and DJ Vadim. But it was not long before his skill, innovation, and performance style led him to attract attention from those outside the club community. In 1998, he was invited to join Money Mark’s band, and then went on the road to open for the Beastie Boys on their "Hello Nasty" world tour.

Not Supergrass, Not the Jicks, but Kid Koala will be supporting Radiohead on their rescheduled Toronto date on October 15th. Kid Koala supported Radiohead on their 2001 North American tour as well. You can still get tickets for the Toronto show at Ticketmaster.ca. [thanks Marco]

Considering that on average Kid Koala performs around 200 shows a year, it's impressive that he made time to see R2-D2 in action on the big screen. When Revenge of the Sith opened in 2005, Kid Koala made sure he was in line with his fellow fans opening weekend in Montreal. As he sat in the theater watching the drama unfold, he couldn't help but appreciate the film on a completely different auditory level that most fans miss.
