Kid Koala: Dj Vadim

Now Kid Koala is ready to kick off the Toronto Comic Arts Festival with a show Friday at the Horseshoe. And while it's being billed as a DJ set, the performer naturally has some tricks up his sleeve.

Kid Koala is the smartest, funniest DJ in hip-hop today, maybe ever. So if Some Of My Best Friends Are DJs doesn’t do anything that wasn’t done on his enthralling 2000 LP Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – and if, at a scant 35 minutes, it’s almost over before you notice it’s on – it’s still worth hearing.

What makes Kid Koala so refreshing is that each of his songs tells a story. He is probably the only scatch DJ right now who is weaving narratives into his songs. Where other scratch DJ records become a blur of clever cuts, Kid Koala prefers to carefully construct his mixes, creating what are in essence, pop songs.

DJ KID KOALA makes other turntable technicians look like lazy, one-dimensional, crab-fingered caricatures. He has released albums solo and with his funk band, Bullfrog; recorded numerous times with Dan the Automator; and opened for Radiohead.

There's a natural expression of playfulness in a Kid Koala routine that's rarely seen in turntablism, especially with its emphasis on mix-off battles and tendencies to celebrate DJs like they were guitar gods of old. Koala throws out a fresh vibe that makes you want to smile, and smile

Two of the world’s best self confessed DJ-nerds KID KOALA & RJD2 have spent the last few years making thrift-store audio collages densely packed with detail. Shelf stacking emptiness; emotive breaks, and boozy jazz; broken beats mended with cinematic ambience; obsessive and manipulated funked up turntablism; and inspired influences ("I'd really like to write songs about the letter Q”, says Koala) - all swimming laps in the instrumental hip hop genre. Oh, and don’t forget funny, hilariously funny.
