Temasek is StanChart’s largest shareholder after acquiring an 11.5 per cent stake from the family of the late Khoo Teck Puat in 2006. It has subsequently increased its holding to more than 17 per cent.

The Khoo family built a hotel portfolio in Singapore and London, and for some years controlled the Australian-based Southern Pacific Hotel Corporation. They had interests in laundry, printing and car distribution and were ... involved, from 1965, in the setting up and running of the National Bank of Brunei.

Khoo gained his early education at St. Joseph's Institution in 1930. Although his education was minimal, it was enough to get him started working in OCBC bank as an Apprentice Bank Clerk by 1933. While attached with OCBC, Khoo served as the Chairman of CPF Board for a year in 1958. His rise in OCBC was rapid and he developed strong ties with founder Tan Chin Tuan until they had difference in opinion which resulted him leaving OCBC in 1959 as the General Manager. He argued that OCBC is growing far too slowly and not opening enough branches the smaller towns in Peninsular Malaya then.

Ong bought his 2.6-acre Kuala Lumpur site in 2003 from the late Singapore billionaire Khoo Teck Puat for 90 million ringgit, or 785 ringgit a square foot. The development, through Venus, would be the fifth Four Seasons property for Ong. His Hotel Properties owns four of the brand's hotels.
