ROBERT Earl, owner of the new Planet Hollywood casino in Las Vegas, opened the doors to his hot London casino, Fifty, yesterday to raise money for Kevin Spacey and his Old Vic Theater. While Sir Elton John, Elle Macpherson, Claudia Schiffer, Jude Law and Dame Judi Dench were generous enough to hand over $5,000 a plate for the lunch, Paris Hilton (above) was the most generous of all - or maybe she just wants to meet a rich guy. For the auction, she agreed to go to dinner in L.A. with the highest bidder.

Spacey announced in February 2003 that he is moving to London, England to become the artistic director of the Old Vic, one of the city's oldest theatres. Spacey will direct a new Old Vic Theatre Company, which will stage shows eight months out of the year, starting in 2004. Spacey has agreed to star in two shows a season, in addition to directorial duties.

Spacey first heard the Scot perform in January when he was in London announcing his appointment as boss of the Old Vic theatre. Since then, he has listened to more of his material and even spoken about him to film- maker pals.

The new Company's first season opened in September 2004 with the British premiere of Cloaca, by Maria Goos, directed by Spacey. It was followed by a new version of the classic family panto, Aladdin, with Ian McKellen as Widow Twankey; the British premiere of Dennis McIntyre's National Anthems with Spacey, Mary Stuart Masterson and Steven Weber; and The Philadelphia Story with Jennifer Ehle as Tracy Lord.
