While both newspapers featured populist editorials and muckraking investigations of political corruption, Packer always had stridently right-wing sympathies. His newspapers distinguished themselves during the Depression by accusing New South Wales Labor Premier Jack Lang of being a communist, and by publishing favourable reports of public meetings held by the New Guard fascist movement. According to a military intelligence report from the period, R.C. Packer was himself a New Guard member.

The book tells how Packer had a four-year affair with Lopes in the late 1970s. Lopes told friends she was Packer's "SONAP: Sex Only, No Appearances in Public", Fairfax newspapers have reported.

"I was lucky and honoured to be one of the first panel under Packer," Cozier added. "He would be regularly in the box overseeing the coverage and was very keen to see how every aspect of the game was being administered."

Packer may have made some creative, innovative investments (assisted by some very co-operative governments, Liberal and Labor). He may have showered largesse on people and institutions he assessed as deserving. He may have sworn like a wharfie and eaten like a truckie.

Packer was a keen polo player, a longtime heavy smoker and an avid gambler, fabled for his titanic wins and losses. In 1999, it was reported that a three-week losing streak at London casinos cost him almost $28 million -- described at the time as the biggest reported gambling loss in British history.

Packer suffered a massive heart attack and was basically dead for six minutes. What he described was his personal experience of nearly dying and how he felt about it emotionally. Just as others are entitled to believe in fairies/reincarnation/various deities he was every bit entitled to come to terms with whatever happened to him in his own way and according to his own beliefs.
