Kerry Packer is Australia's most richest man. His wealth is estimated in the billions of dollars. It is his media industry that has made him both wealthy and very powerful. Kerry Packer is the owner of the Channel NineHoyts cinema, Women's Day, a part of Foxtel (pay TV) and owns 60% of all magazines sold in Australia.

PBL owns the Channel 9 TV station in Australia, the majority of the magazines and newspapers published in Australia, gambling interests including the Burswood and Crown Casino, and various other Internet, media and financial interests.

Kerry Packer finished school when he was 19 and went to work with his father in the newspaper industry. They had a very difficult relationship but Kerry admired his father and realised that he was a lot like him. In 1977, Kerry wanted special rights to the Sheffield and Test cricket but was denied. So he made up his own team with the best players. He then got his way in 1979, after years of hard work and arguing. Packer is very good at knowing when to buy and when to sell.

Kerry Packer, born in 1937, received a brutal upbringing from his tyrannical father. He was packed off to a boarding school, which happened to be a few hundred metres down the road from the family home, when he was just five years old. His academic performance was always poor; his father called him “Boofhead”, while his mother often referred to him as “Dummy”. After leaving school, Packer went to work for his father, and for a period was forced to work as a cleaner on the Daily Telegraph’s printing presses.

Kerry Packer will be missed in the polo world no doubt. His son James, who won the Gold Cup in England about 8 years ago or maybe more, was on his way to being the best amateur in the World. James decided to work and is running some of the family businesses. Lucky for polo James has recently started playing again. KP was ... famous for the Packer-whacker, a heart starter for heart failure which happened to him a few years ago. The story is told that he was playing polo and had a heart attack out at his ranch in Austrailia.

Kerry Packer was born on December 17, 1937, in Sydney, Australia. He was the younger son of Douglas Frank Hewson Packer (Frank), Chairman of the Australian Consolidated Press (ACP), and Gretel Packer. Packer was sent to a boarding school at the age of five. He contracted polio at the age of six. During the two years he was affected with polio, Packer spent his time with a private nurse in Canberra.
