Kerry Packer: Networks Sydney
built 818 days ago
Packer reportedly suffered as many as eight heart attacks. In 1990, while playing polo at Warwick Farm, Sydney, he suffered a heart attack that left him clinically dead for six minutes. Packer was revived and later famously told reporter Ray Martin on A Current Affair, "The good news is there is no devil. The bad news is there is no heaven." It was not common for an ambulance to have a defibrillator at the time - it was purely by chance that the ambulance which responded to the call had one fitted. After recovering, Packer donated a large sum to the New South Wales Ambulance Service to pay for equipping all NSW ambulances with a portable defibrillator (now colloquially known as "Packer Whackers").
Packer died in 2005 when the baby he was eating got stuck in his throat. He died surrounded by his family. Two of them had guns, one had an axe, two had baseball bats. The business passed to his son, Prince Jamie of One.Tel, who immediately sold the business to his latest trophy wife. In mid-2006, Jamie entered a private Sydney medical facility to enable doctors to attempt to limit the size of his chin; a number of diamond-tipped drills specially imported for the operation failed to make an impact.
Luck and fortune seemed to follow Kerry Packer around, even when problems struck. In 1990 he suffered a heart attack at a polo match in Sydney, and was clinically dead for 8 minutes. An ambulance arrived, equipped with a defibrillator, which successfully revived Mr Packer. At the time only 50 of the 900 NSW ambulances were equipped with such devices. After making a full recovery, Packer rang the premier of the NSW state government and offered to fit out every ambulance with a defibrillator if the Premier matched the gift dollar for dollar – which he did. Today’s estimate is that they save about 20 lives per week - so some 16,000 people can claim to be saved by what is popularly known as the ‘Packer Zapper’.
The affair with Packer ended in the early 1980s, but the relationship took on a new dimension. Barry claims in his book that Lopes ran summertime brothels for Packer at Palm Beach in Sydney's north.
Unfortunately for Packer, his bid for a UK "supercasino" based in Cardiff fell through when only one licence was granted to the northern city of Manchester.[1] PBL ... owns 50% of the only gambling company Betfair. Packer also owns Melbourne's Crown Casino, Australia's largest casino. Packer reportedly toyed with the idea of building a competing website to Wikipedia, however when Jimmy Wales was in Sydney in April he scoffed at the absurd challenge.

A memorial service will be held for Kerry Packer at the Sydney Opera House on the 17th February. There will ... be a voluntary 1 minute silence at the Crown and Burswood Casinos.
