After his father's death in 1974 Kerry Packer took control of the business. Packer continually expanded and grew the company over the years. The companies were merged and became part of the Publishing and Broadcasting Limited company in 1994. The core industries that PBL has interests in is Television broadcasting and production, magazine distribution and publication, and gaming.

To the extent that it is possible in a country without a centuries-old aristocracy, Packer was to the manor born. It's true, he multiplied many times over the $100 million-plus fortune that he inherited from his father in 1974. But unlike other entrepreneurs in the free market that Packer did not support, he admitted that he never risked his shirt, never risked the essential fortune he had inherited. There was never the chance that he would end up on struggle street, only the risk that he would be reduced to the status of another rich man.

Packer had a hard childhood, and once said his main contact with his father was when he was being disciplined. Returning to school after the polio, he concentrated on sport, which became his way of survival.
