In a wide-open Kentucky Derby, it ended up being the previously undefeated and favored Smarty Jones that captured the 130th Run For The Roses. The victory by the son of Elusive Quality was the first for owners Roy and Pat Chapman, trainer John Servis, and jockey Stewart Elliott. Two and three quarter lengths behind Smarty Jones in second was the ultra-game Lion Heart, who had the lead for the first mile of the race. In third, another four lengths back, was Imperialism. The winner paid $10.20, $6.20, and $4.80.

The Barnstable-Brown Foundation raises funds for diabetes research through its internationally known Kentucky Derby party, the Barnstable Brown Gala. The foundation is led by Patricia Barnstable Brown; her son, Christopher Barnstable Brown; her sister, Priscilla Lee Barnstable; and her mother, Wilma Haverly Barnstable. The late David E. Brown, husband of Patricia Barnstable Brown, was the inspiration behind the gala. He died July 31, 2003, after a long battle with diabetes.
