Kenny Troutt: Bill Casner
built 630 days ago
The dynamic WinStar Farm owners, entrepreneurs Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner, have efficiently transferred the business acumen that brought them success in such ventures as Excel Communications to the raising of champion Thoroughbreds. Since their purchase of the former Prestonwood Farm in early 2000, Troutt and Casner have transformed WinStar into one of the country's leading operations. In addition to a stallion roster that includes 2002 leading freshman sire Distorted Humor and dual Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Tiznow, WinStar has bred such outstanding horses as dual classic winner and champion three-year-old Funny Cide and Irish highweight One Cool Cat.
WinStar Farm is a Thoroughbred racing and breeding operation located in Versailles, Ky that is owned by Bill Casner (pictured) and Kenny Troutt. Casner grew up in El Paso, Texas. In 1963, at the age of 15, he started galloping horses at Sunland Park. He put him self through college at Tarleton State University by galloping throughbreds, including champion Cho Croute. Upon graduation Casner embarked on a training career in the midwest. In 1979 Casner left the Thoroughbred industry.
Emblematic of the New Boom is 49-year-old Kenny Troutt, the founder of Excel Communications. Troutt grew up in an Illinois housing project, but today he’s a billionaire. After losing his shirt in oil and construction, he made his money in the long-distance business. In the past four years Excel’s revenues have exploded from $20 million to $1.4 billion. True to the spartan spirit of the new era, Troutt eschews opulence. “I’ve seen people build a business by living, thinking, eating, and sleeping for the business,” he says.

He resides in Dallas with his wife Lisa and their three children.
The winner was bred by the Win Star Farm of Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner. They bought the farm near Versailles, Ky., in early 2000 so the mating was done by the previous owners, brothers Art. Jack and J.R. Preston. The farm was then called Prestonwood. Distorted Humor, sire of the Derby winner, stands at Win Star.
Kenny A. Troutt (born 1948) was the founder of Excel Communications, a Texas based telecommunications company that used MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) to offer its main product, a long distance phone service. Troutt became a billionaire in 1998 when Excel was sold to Teleglobe for $3.5 billion. His share is undetermined.
