Kenny Everett

Kenny Everett was born Maurice Cole on Christmas day 1944, a welcome gift for his less than well off parents. With his father only a lowly tugboat man, the Coles lived a life of relative poverty in one of the poorest areas of Liverpool. Nevertheless, they all lived a happy existence and the young Everett developed a strong fun loving streak. His sense of humour served him well when his feeble stature and pale complexion was picked up on by the school bullies. Deflecting their attention with humour seemed easy. Even at this young age, he had discovered that being funny could be a vital life skill.

Long before he developed the pioneering approach to the radio disc jockey’s art that influenced such disciples as Kenny Everett and Noel Edmonds, Jack Jackson was a trumpeter for Ambrose, Jack Hylton and Jack Payne. He formed his own band in 1933 - with ‘Dancing In The Dark’ as his signature tune, a residency at London’s Dorchester Hotel, and Al Bowlly among the featured vocalists – and began a Radio Luxembourg series with his band in 1939.

From the moment the late Kenny Everett created his space hero Captain Kremmen, the world of radio comedy would never be the same again. Though only four or five minutes in length, each episode showed off brilliantly the genius mind and superb production skills of Kenny. Along with Carla, Dr Gitfinger and a cast of many others, Captain Kremmen boldly explores the universe defeating evil wherever it rears its ugly head! These shows were originally broadcast by London’s Capital Radio in the late 70s and 80s. New episode added on Monday 11th September..

The closing line of what was Kenny Everett's arguably most outrageous creation. The line was usually accompanied by an energetic crossing of legs, treating viewers to a brief glimpse of her nether regions. Cupid first appeared on The Kenny Everett Video Show (1978 - 1981) on ITV, but when Everett moved to the BBC his new bosses asked him to rename Cupid Stunt. 'Mary Hinge' was suggested as a replacement, which frightened the bejesus out of the beeb, who decided to stick with Cupid.

In the very last show, Kenny Everett got down on his hands and knees and begged for another series. And he might have got it too, if he hadn't been diagnosed with HIV just a few months later. Everett retreated to his natural homeland of radio, although he returned to the gogglebox in 1992 with Gibberish.
