Kenny Everett: Series
built 209 days ago
Whereas Morcambe and Wise and the Goodies went from BBC to ITV and went downhill, Kenny Everett went from ITV to BBC and got better. Unfortunately when he got to the last series, Kenny Everett wanted to do a sitcom, but the Beeb (as Kenny was the first person to call the BBC) wanted him to do more sketch shows. But the sketch show format had got stale and they should have let him do the sitcom instead
On his return to Radio London in 1966, Everett was sent on an exciting mission to tour with The Beatles round America. This eventually lead to a long friendship with the Fab Four. Though at first, Everett didn’t have a clue how to interview anyone. For the first few days, the most penetrating question he asked any of them was “how’s it going?" Eventually, The Beatles took pity on him. Paul McCartney pulled him to one side and said if Everett asked him one question, he’d give an answer lasting ten minutes, which he did. He was the first DJ ever to play ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.
Everett was technically brilliant, planning shows for several days as well as cutting, splicing and mixing his own skits. Artistically, he single-handedly created the pop music presentation styles still used today. However, his legacy was always of little importance to him. During his lifetime, he strived to create laughter and allow his audiences to join him in his immaturity and silliness, and he definitely succeeded. As a one man crusade against all things sensible and serious, Everett managed to offer a small space once a week for adults to enjoy the sort of tomfoolery usually reserved for children, sending a ripple of laughter across Britain every Saturday evening.
