Kenny Everett: Capital Radio
built 215 days ago
During 1970 to 1973, Everett recorded shows for Local BBC Radio in Bristol, Solent, Medway, Merseyside, Brighton and Nottingham, all made in a recording studio in his home. He was dismissed by Radio Solent after enthusing on-air about the arrival of commercial radio, although other regions seem to have allowed the same show to air without objection. He ... hosted the BBC Radio 4 Children’s show “If It’s Wednesday, It Must Be” alongside Kenneth Robinson, Ivor Cutler and Vivian Stanshall, and a Christmas Special for Radio 4 called Everett On Everett. He briefly returned to Radio One in 1973 for a weekly show, but the management insisted this too had to be recorded beforehand. This ended on the 30th of September 1973 when he left for commercial radio.
It was not possible for Kenny to send live reports direct to the ship because the Post Office had cut off ship-to-shore communication with all the pirate vessels, so he had to phone a number on land. Radio London news chief Paul Kaye would come ashore to take the call, record the conversation with Kenny, then head back to the ship where the recording was edited and music added to compile a 30 minute programme. Sponsored by Bassett's Jelly Babies, supposedly The Beatles' favourite sweets, the shows went out each evening at 7.30pm for the duration of the tour.
Diagnosed as HIV positive in 1989, Everett died from an Aids-related illness on 4 April 1995. The previous year he had been awarded the Sony Radio Gold Award for his achievements in radio.
