Ken Venturi, former U.S. Open winner and longtime CBS Sports golf analyst, talks with friend Greg Orlen at Eagle Creek Country Club on Monday afternoon. Venturi is a former Marco Island resident back in town as part of the Bill Owen Golf Classic charity tournament. In many ways, Venturi was lucky to be able to come back. He had a mild heart attack and underwent a quintuple-bypass on Dec. 1, 2006 at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Venturi had gained a reputation as one of the best iron players in the game. However, after 1960, he decided to make some changes to gain more length off the tee. His game lost consistency and he went into a deep slump.
Venturi finished alone in second place, making him the second amateur -- joining Frank Stanahan in 1947 -- to record a runner-up finish in Augusta. Charles Coe would finish tied for second as an amateur in 1961.

Venturi, a religious man, considered himself close to the Deity and had arranged with a priest to say his prayers at a local Catholic church the night before the final rounds. He later explained, "I was asking God to help me believe in myself."
Venturi made secret trips between his Florida home and California for cancer treatments—and he met Kathleen. She gave him a whole new lease on life. His prostate cancer is now 100 percent cured.
