Ken Venturi: Pga Tour
built 657 days ago
Ken had a successful amateur career, winning the California State Amateur in 1951 and again in 1956. Later that year Venturi turned professional and began competing on the PGA Tour. Ken's success as a competitive golfer was undeniable; he claimed 14 PGA Tour victories between 1957 and 1966.
After 1964, Venturi's career again took a blow when he was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. After several surgeries his condition was reversed, but he was never able to regain his past form. After retiring from the Tour in 1967 with a total of 14 career wins, Venturi spent the next 30 years working as a color commentator for CBS Sports as well as owning and operating a series of instructional schools.
In desperation, Venturi telephoned Bill Jennings, the Thunderbird tournament director, pleading, "Hey, Bill, can you let me in?" Happily, Jennings had one of five sponsor invitations left and was touched, saying, "Come on up, Ken." Venturi virtually galloped to the Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y., and won a $6,400 check by finishing third, a four-year high, and evidence that his game had perhaps come back.
Venturi grew up in California. He had a severe stuttering problem as a youth, and enjoyed spending hours alone on the golf course. As a 13-year-old, Venturi followed Byron Nelson at a tournament and Nelson became his hero - and later, Nelson became his mentor and his Ryder Cup captain at the 1965 matches.
