Knightley became a bona fide star as a result of her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, though she wasn't paid like one. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer locked her in to the first two films at scale; Knightley finally finagled a raise, to $5 million, for this summer's At World's End. The new face of Chanel, Knightley is currently filming The Edge of Love, about poet Dylan Thomas' lovers, with Sienna Miller. Her original co-star was said to have been Lindsay Lohan, but the Hollywood wild child pulled out days before the film began shooting.

Trained in dance from an early age, Knightley made her film debut when she was 12 in Moira Armstrong's romantic drama A Village Affair. Gradually climbing the credits with subsequent roles in Innocent Lies (1995) and the made-for-TV features Treasure Seekers (1996) and Coming Home (1998), she got her first big break when cast as the decoy queen in the eagerly anticipated Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Knightley resembled the actual queen (portrayed by Natalie Portman) so much that her mother couldn't distinguish the two and some fans still insist both were portrayed by Portman.

"Keira is as tough as nails," says Fuqua, who beefed up Knightley's role after watching her in action at the training camp outside London. "She got herself in shape, and when she got those bumps and bruises when we were shooting the battle scenes, I'd ask if she needed a doctor, but she was like, 'I'm OK,' and she'd walk right back on the set."

Keira has ... signed up to appear in 'Domino', a new film by Donnie Darko writer Richard Kelly and directed by Tony Scott. She will play a bounty hunter in what should be a challenging role - filming should kick off in October.
