Although by global standards the prevalence of HIV/AIDS remains relatively low in Kazakhstan, the country suffers from one of the fastest-growing HIV/AIDS epidemics in the world. Between 1996 and October 2006 the number of officially registered HIV cases grew more than 50-fold (from 100 to over 5,440). Unofficially, the number was estimated in 2005 to be as high as 20,000.

The sixth annual Eurasian Media Forum (EAMF), a unique platform for East-West dialogue, recently took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan's former capital. For three days, beginning April 19, more than 600 delegates from 50 countries, including prominent politicians and journalists from leading news media outlets, gathered at the Intercontinental Hotel's conference hall to discuss the most important issues on the world's and region's agenda.

The development of the alternative energies is the part of the diversification program established by the government of Kazakhstan. The country which has 3.3% of all hydrocarbon resources in the world (39 600 million barrels of proved reserves in 2004), doesn't want to be dependent on oil and gas, but wishes to develop other economic sectors such as wind, solar, hydropower and biomass power industries.
