In As it is in Heaven the director and writer Kay Pollak powerfully illustrates the complexity of humanity and that people are essentially a mixture of good and bad parts. In this way it departs from the usual character boundaries constructed by Hollywood: that of the good guy versus the bad guy or the black or white personality type. This is what makes the characters so relatable, their stories so devastating and the triumphs so sweet.

This is director Kay Pollak’s first feature film in almost two decades and Sweden’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Picture. When renowned conductor Daniel Dareus (Michael Nyqvist) is diagnosed with a physical ailment that brings a premature end to his career, the intense man leaves the bright lights of big city life and returns to the small village he lived in until he was seven years old. His last name changed many years earlier, none of the town’s residents realize that the famous man living among them was once an alienated child who was constantly abused by his schoolmates until his mother moved them out of the village. Residing in an old, abandoned schoolhouse, Daniel takes a job as the church’s cantor and, as part of the position, becomes the leader of the choir. Through his work with the choir, Daniel serves to bring most of the village closer together, but ostracizes the church’s pastor (Niklas Falk) and a violent drunk (Per Morberg) who was one of Daniel’s childhood tormenters.

This Swedish film directed by award-winning director Kay Pollak, and nominated for an Oscar, is both extraordinary and memorable in its story and execution. The opening frames of As it is in Heavenresonate from silence into an oceanic wind-rush of long grass concealing a young boy absorbed in playing a violin, his sheet music pinned to the reeds.
