No one knows what causes Kawasaki disease. Some experts think it may be caused by a virus or a bacteria. Others think that chemicals or pollutants may cause it. It does not appear to spread from person to person. Since it is rare for more than one child in the same family to get Kawasaki disease, it does not appear to be genetic.

It usually takes a few weeks for a child to get over Kawasaki disease. You'll have to keep your child home from school or day care until he or she feels strong enough to return.

There are three phases of Kawasaki disease. The first phase is characterized by fever, pus in the urine, red eyes, intensely red tongue, dry fissured lips, rash, swollen hands and feet, enlarged lymph nodes and abnormal liver test.
