Kawasaki Disease has been identified. exist and could explain why the disease occurs more frequently among persons of Japanese ancestry. At the present time there is no evidence that the disease is contagious.

Kawasaki disease was first diagnosed in Japan in the 1960s. It can occur in people of any race or ethnic origin, although it is still most common in Japan. It affects mostly children five years old and under, although children of age can get it. Boys are twice as likely to get the disease as girls.
Kawasaki disease occurs more often in boys than girls, and most commonly in children of Japanese or Korean descent, although any child can get it. It can cause serious complications of the heart and the blood vessels that supply the heart. Some of these complications may be life-threatening.

Kawasaki disease is an acute self-limited immune-mediated form of vasculitis that primarily affects infants and young children. First described in Japan in 1967, Kawasaki’s disease is known to occur in both endemic and community-wide epidemic forms in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, affecting children of all races.
