In the absence of a known etiologic agent, initial therapy for Kawasaki disease is directed at reducing fever and other inflammatory features to help prevent the development of coronary artery abnormalities and subsequent myocardial ischemic injury. Long-term therapy is targeted at avoiding coronary thrombosis by preventing platelet aggregation.

Diagnosis of Kawasaki disease is based on criteria that include high fevers for five days and four other signs. Very young infants may not show as many of the typical signs of the disease. Blood tests will show elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein, and alpha-1 antitrypsin levels. An echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) is done to check for any aneurysms or heart disease.
Kawasaki disease can be a very uncomfortable illness, since it causes fever, as well as irritation and inflammation in many tissues of the body. However, these symptoms usually run their course and resolve within a few weeks. The primary concern with Kawasaki disease is heart and blood vessel involvement.
