Kawasaki Disease: Doctors
built 627 days ago
When Kawasaki disease affects the coronary arteries, they may expand and twist. If this happens, your child's doctor may prescribe anticoagulants (like warfarin) to prevent blood clots from forming in the affected coronary arteries.

Kawasaki disease usually affects children younger than 5 years old. It occurs more often among boys. It is ... more common in people of Asian descent, but it can occur in any racial or ethnic group. Kawasaki disease is not contagious, but doctors think some sort of germ or virus causes the disease because it can occur in outbreaks (usually in the late winter or spring).

The cause of Kawasaki disease is unknown. Currently, doctors at Children's Memorial are conducting research to determine its cause and to learn why some children, but not others, are vulnerable to it.
