built 643 days ago
The medical management of Kawasaki disease (KD) involves the use of gamma globulin and aspirin as anti-inflammatory agents and long-term anticoagulation. Some controversy exists about the ideal timing to begin gamma-globulin, but that is not an issue that concerns emergency physicians.

The causative agent of Kawasaki disease is still unknown. However, current etiological theories center primarily on immunological causes for the disease. Much research is being performed to discover a definitive toxin or antigenic substance, possibly a superantigen, that is the specific cause of the disease. An unknown virus may play a role as an inciting factor as well.
doctor head The causative agent of Kawasaki disease remains to be unknown. However, an immune- mediated mechanism and an unidentified virus has been presently hypothesized as possible causative factors. Therefore, continuous research is being done to eventually discover a definitive toxin or antigenic substance that is specifically causing the disease.

Epidemiologic features and clinical presentation suggest an infectious etiology for Kawasaki disease. To date... an etiologic agent has not been documented. A variety of infectious agents have been proposed, including rickettsiae, viruses (primarily Epstein-Barr virus and retroviruses), Streptococcus viridans, staphylococci, Propionibacterium species and parvovirus. Standard laboratory studies have been unsuccessful in identifying a specific agent.19
